small group instruction

As a reminder, Monday, 11/17, is a minimum day for students with a 1:05 PM dismissal. Parent/Teacher conferences will be held that afternoon. There will be a delayed opening on Tuesday, 11/18, with the school day beginning at 10:20. Students may start arriving at school at 10:05.

It was great to see so many families during parent/teacher conferences last week. We value your partnership and look forward to our regular communication to help all students achieve academic, social, and emotional growth. When attending school for conferences, parents should enter via the front door. You will need your driver’s license to enter. Please be sure to leave enough time to park and sign in before your scheduled conference time.

Colder weather seems to be upon us! We make every effort to go outside for recess each day, even in cold weather, as the fresh air and exercise are important for our students. With that being said, please keep this in mind when choosing winter outerwear for your child(ren).

Message from Mr. Cosman regarding this week’s school musical rehearsals: Check out the updated November Calendar for this week's upcoming musical rehearsal schedule. Students should now enter via the gym doors. Please wait in your car until someone opens the doors at 8:15. Contact Mr. Cosman if you have any questions, or refer to his email.

We will have a schoolwide meeting on Wednesday, 11/26. All students and staff are encouraged to wear Coolidge spirit wear or blue/yellow.

ONE SCHOOL, ONE BOOK

Message from Mrs. Han…

One Book, One School's reading schedule is now halfway through the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl. Thank you to all the families who are reading at home with your child(ren) and supporting the program. The students enjoy discussing the stories and inventions of Mr. Wonka. For your reference, please visit this site for the schedule, answer weekly questions from the reading, and stay informed with events at the media center.

2ND ANNUAL TURKEY TROT

Our Coolidge School community will host our 2nd Annual Turkey Trot on Monday, November 17th (rain date Nov.18th) during the school day. On this day, each grade level will go outside to walk, jog, or run laps around the backfield during a thirty-minute period. This event will help raise awareness in our students about food insecurity and rally support for local families. We hope to instill gratitude for our blessings and give thanks by making a turkey donation to support others in need. With that in mind, please consider donating a frozen turkey for the event. The frozen turkey drop-off will be on Friday, November 21st, on the front lawn of the school from 8:00-10:00 am. All donations will be given to the Center for Food Action to create holiday dinner baskets for families in need.

STUDENT COUNCIL COAT DRIVE

The season of giving is upon us! Coolidge Student Council will once again be hosting our annual Coat Drive! Families are encouraged to donate new or gently used coats to benefit New Destiny Family Success Center in Paterson. All coat sizes will be accepted. The coat drive will be held from November 24th to December 3rd. Students should bring the coats to school and drop them in the collection bin near the front and back entrances.

VETERANS DAY

This week in Physical Education class, we saluted our veterans. Mrs. McCurry and Mrs. Reitano created PE stations designed to honor Veterans Day with fitness and military-themed activities. These stations were designed to blend physical education with patriotic themes, allowing students to be active while learning about the significance of veterans. Also, many students made handmade cards to present to Officer Rob to thank him for his service to our country as a U.S. Marine.

ATTENDANCE

Tuesday is the 50th day of the school year. Attendance letters for those children who are in jeopardy of being considered “chronically absent” will be sent out.

As defined by the New Jersey Department of Education and as noted in Wyckoff Board of Education Policy #5200, a student is considered

in session for which the student was enrolled. As we have been in school for 50 days so far this year, I am providing this information as a guide so you can monitor your child's attendance as it relates to the definition of chronic absenteeism. Each school is required to report rates of chronic absenteeism to the New Jersey Department of Education. If any of the days were taken for a religious holiday, that day would not count towards the chronically absent count.

Although it is understood that children may need to miss school occasionally due to illness or other reasons, the importance of regular attendance cannot be overemphasized. Evidence indicates that it is how many days a student misses that matters, not why they miss, when analyzing attendance and educational outcomes. Regular attendance is essential to a child's academic and social growth. Students who frequently miss school lose valuable learning time, exposure to class content, and opportunities to develop positive relationships with classmates.
