4th graders

All Wyckoff schools will be closed on Thursday, October 2nd, in observance of Yom Kippur.

NJSLA scores will be mailed home this week for last year’s grade 3-5 students.

Our media specialist, Mrs. Han, is pleased to introduce a new website for the Coolidge Media Center. It is a work in progress, but parents and students are encouraged to take a look! Of particular note, there is a section where parents may sign up to be a media center volunteer. Space is limited, so we kindly ask you to sign up for one slot per class/child.

As we near the end of September, students have been settling into the routines of the school year. They are to be commended for their hard work and effort! Our amazing teaching staff has helped them make a smooth transition and emphasized with them the importance of learning and practicing social-emotional competencies, as well as developing an academic mindset.

WEEK OF RESPECT- OCTOBER 6TH-10TH

At Coolidge School, it is our goal to promote respectful behavior from our students throughout the entire school year. However, during the Week of Respect, we spend additional time celebrating and reinforcing this important message for our students. During the week of October 6th, Mrs. Mapes has planned some meaningful activities, including fun spirit days, Kindness in Chalk, classroom lessons, read-alouds, and a schoolwide meeting. Specifically, we are going to introduce the core competencies of cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control (or C.A.R.E.S. Competencies) with our students.

STUDENT COUNCIL- GRADES 4 AND 5

Last week, students listened to an information presentation about the Student Council. We explained what the Student Council is, the election process, and how they can get involved.  Fourth-grade students are eligible to be elected class representatives by their homerooms. Fifth-grade students are eligible to be elected for the executive board (President, VP, Secretary, and Treasurer), and are elected by the fourth and fifth-grade student body. All fourth and fifth-grade students are able and encouraged to attend meetings as a Cougar Congress member, regardless of whether they run or are elected for office.

Fourth and fifth-grade parents received an email from the Student Council advisors, Mrs. Pennino and Ms. Dulmage, with more information and a presentation.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND ONLINE SAFETY

Student use of social media, texting, online video games, and unsupervised use of technology often results in unsafe behaviors, conflict, and mental health concerns. At school, we have seen the impact of this as the above can get in the way of a student's ability to interact appropriately with peers and often distracts from academic achievement and focus. I ask that you actively and carefully supervise your child(ren)’s cell phone, web searching, video game, and social media use if they have access to this type of technology.

Parents may be interested in the two resources below from the National Association of Elementary School Principals on this topic, as well as resources from Common Sense Media

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY- OCTOBER 8TH

Our first school-wide PTO Green Team event is Coolidge's Annual Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 8.

  • Get some fresh air and leave your car behind!

  • Walk or bike to school to get some exercise and reduce traffic and air pollution!

  • Students will be greeted by the Cougar and some music upon their arrival on this fun kick-off to the school day!

Fun Idea: Reach out to your friends and neighbors to create a “Walking School Bus” from your neighborhood. Don’t forget about friends who live too far to walk, or are unable to walk with their child(ren). Invite them to be dropped off at your house so they can walk too.

Thank you for joining in on the fun!

I-READY DIAGNOSTIC SCORES

You may access your child's iReady diagnostic scores for grades 1-5. Here are directions for accessing the scores. You may need to make sure that pop-ups are not blocked on your device.

I-Ready creates a personalized learning plan, termed “My Path,” based on the student’s diagnostic, to address areas for growth. This, along with each teacher's personalized instruction plan for each student, helps us differentiate instruction and increase growth.

Kindergarten students will be administered the assessment at the beginning of October, and scores can be accessed after that time.
