kindergarten students playing in leaves

As Thanksgiving is quickly approaching I wanted to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our Coolidge parents for their support of our students and staff. Together, we can work to ensure our children are provided with a warm and caring community that focuses on academic achievement and learning while supporting social/emotional well-being. A huge thank you goes out to our Coolidge PTO and all of our parents and families. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

STUDENT COUNCIL COAT DRIVE

Are you looking to help others this holiday season? The Coolidge Student Council will be partnering with One Warm Coat to host a Holiday Coat Drive! Families are encouraged to donate gently used coats to benefit The Boys and Girls Club of Paterson. There is a large need for children's coats, but coats of all sizes will be accepted. The drive will be held from November 27th to December 1st. Students should bring the coats to school and drop them in the collection bin near the front entrance.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UPDATE

Our PE department had some spooky fun in October with some Halloween and fall activity stations. In November, we are focusing on gratitude-themed activities for the students to reflect on the true meaning of the season. We started the month with a salute to the veterans' workouts. The stations and activities were a fun way to show respect to those who chose to honor and protect our country and safety. Each student had the opportunity to sign the gratitude poster to share with our local veterans. A Salute to our Veterans workout included Army Crawl, Build It Up, Basic Training, Hurdles, and Boot Camp.

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

Grades K-1

Kindergarteners are getting accustomed to using desktop computers. We are working on mouse skills and coordination through engaging learning activities on the computer. 1st graders are now expert Chromebook users! They are doing an excellent job navigating the trackpad and accessing Google Classroom. Recently, 1st graders made their own little robots using a Bristlebot Kit; they were a huge hit! In both K and 1st grade, we often move through stations to build, create, and experiment with our robotic resources.

2nd Grade

In 2nd grade, we learned about how to create Google Slides. We learned how to change font, color, and backgrounds, add images, and add transitions. In the Slides, students shared all about themselves and got to know each other better while learning an important platform on Google Suite.

3rd Grade

In 3rd grade, we started the year by making fall-themed animations on Google Slides. It was a tedious task, but the third graders were up to the challenge and they came out amazing! We are starting to delve into Digital Citizenship and online safety in the coming weeks. Students will then use Canva to create something that shows their understanding of being a good digital citizen.

4th Grade

In 4th grade, we have reviewed shortcuts and explored Canva. Using Canva, students have created posters for the Week of Respect, and are now creating personalized presentations using the application. We will soon discuss Digital Citizenship and online safety on a deeper scale then create Google Slides presentations to share what we learned.

5th Grade

In 5th grade, we discussed ways to evaluate online sources to ensure credibility. Then, students chose a topic of interest to briefly research. Now, students are using their researched topics to create a Google Site. Each class will be participating in a 5th-grade broadcast called The Cougar's Cave, where students will plan a variety of segments to record. All students will get a chance to be on camera, record, and help produce an episode of The Cougar's Cave. 5T is up first, and we hope the first episode will air to students and families by mid-December!

AUTHOR VISIT INFORMATION AND BOOK PURCHASE OPPORTUNITY

Thanks to the generosity of the PTO, author Wendy Mass will be coming to Coolidge School on Friday, December 8th. She writes wonderful chapter books for both older and younger students. She will talk about her writing process and get students excited about their writing. We can't wait!

In preparation for her visit, we are offering the opportunity to purchase personalized autographed books. Please use this form to order books that you want autographed (and personalized if you want). Thanks to the generosity of The Curious Reader in Glen Rock, we can offer these books at a discount. Please return the form to Mrs. Needleman by Monday, November 20th.
