grade 1-2 students at an author visit assembly

Students in grades 3, 4 & 5 will be taking the NJSLA, the New Jersey Standardized Learning Assessment, beginning on Tuesday, May 9th.  The assessment will begin at the very start of the day, so please try to ensure that your son or daughter is at school on time during testing.  The assessments last between 60 and 90 minutes each morning.  Here are a few helpful hints for a successful assessment experience:

  • Make sure your child gets ample sleep the night before the assessment.

  • Provide a nutritious breakfast each morning.

  • As with all assessments, students should put forth their best effort.

  • Suggest that your child go back to double-check answers prior to submitting the test, and take his/her time on the assessment.

The testing schedule will be as follows:

English Language Arts (Grades 3-5) - May 9th-10th

Science (Grade 5 only) - May 11th-12th

Mathematics (Grades 3-5) - May 16th-18th

COOLIDGE SCHOOL AUTHOR VISIT

Author, poet, and staff developer Amy Ludwig VanDerwater visited Coolidge School on May 2nd. During her visit, Mrs. VanDerwater met with grades 1-2  teachers to conduct lesson studies in the area of writing instruction. She also presented an assembly to our grade 1-2 students about writing and her inspiration to be an author. Mrs. VanDerwater inspired and encouraged our students to “write from their hearts” and helped show that we all can be writers!

MEDIA CENTER UPDATE

We are reading a wide variety of books in Media this month. First graders are reading folktales and discussing why they think these stories have been passed down. Second graders are reading popular nonfiction authors Steve Jenkins and Gail Gibbons. Third graders are reading fractured fairy tales and comparing them to the originals. Fourth graders are reading Greek myths and learning lessons from the stories. It's always so much fun to expose them to all of these great books!
