Problem Solving

How Parents Can Help

Regardless of how capable a child is to compute, problem solving or "word problems" seem to give most students difficulty. When you see the content of learning your child is experiencing, make up word problems for application of the skill. Help your child decide when it's appropriate to use the varied operations used in mathematics: addition, subtraction, division, or multiplication. It seems simple to us, but for many children, understanding that "how many altogether" means addition and "shared between" may mean division is hard. Problem solving is generally disliked by students rather than seeing the task as an adventure and their mission as a discovery. If you can share an interest in problem solving with your child, they will reap tremendous benefits.
